The problem with Kickstarter is that it makes people think that "millions" is simply too much and they are doing super fine (see what i did there?)....
In reality a studio like Double Fine needs much more money to survive... Heck, if you earn DOUBLE of what the game you made cost you then all you managed was to finance your next game which has to be the same size than your current game (so you cant even aim bigger next time), and if that game is not a great success or simply breaks even then youre back at ground zero.
Many Indie studios expect their successes to earn as much as 7-10 times the cost of their game, just so you can either scale up with your next project or get a cushion for the next 5 projects, and because not every single game you make is gonna sell like pancakes.
The business side of Indie Gaming is hard pal.
